Snapper Fishing Guide

Snappers are a saltwater fish found at most marinas, docks and beaches on the Great South Bay and Long Island Sound. They eat just about anything that moves or is shiny. Spearing is a common bait bought at any tackle shop, Snapper Poppers are great for impatient anglers that like to cast and reel in constantly while lures like Kastmasters, Sidewinders and Phoebe Spoons are for more advanced casting and retrieving lovers.

For Snappers, use a 6.5 to 7.5-foot ultralight or light-power spinning rod and a small spinning reel with 8 lb test monofilament or braided line, optionally with a short fluorocarbon leader. This light setup, such as an Ugly Stik with a small reel (2500), provides sensitivity for feeling bites and the flexibility to absorb head shakes, while the 8 lb line is adequate for their size and offers good casting distance with small lures.Â
